SSL pointing to domain name instead of internal server FQDN - I need a workaroun

Hello security guru's, security n00b here.

We have a customer using remote desktop services on 2k8r2sp1. They want remote access to the rdweb portal. Purchased an SSL from network solutions (domain name host is 1&1). the internal domain is domain.local. Their domain name is domainname.com. The internal servername is rds.domain.local.

NOTE there's a difference in their external and internal LAN domain as explained above.

We created the CSR on ISS of the remote desktop server to the external subdomain remote.domainname.com. It was validated successfully.

Now we are having trouble with outside access, we believe is because we should have used the fqdn of the server (rds.domain.local) instead of the remote.domainname.com address.

Now network solutions says that they cannot make that change because it was already validated, great.

Is there a way that I can make this work without having to tell the customer to purchase a new ssl so we can use the fqdn instead, heck and even then I am not sure if that would work >:o[

thanks!
