Not sure where this really belongs but it is security related.
How do you get your foot in the door for a security career?
Reaching the end of my 12 month work contract and it is time to decide where and what to do next, the end goal is to work in network security, currently have a few years as part-time PC repair/maintenance under my belt and a year of system administrator experience, so not sure if that is enough to start looking for jobs in computer security or if I need to work a few years in other positions.
Security has kind of been a hobby of mine for a couple of years, now working for my Security+ certification, thought it may be worth setting up shop and doing part-time penetration testing to gain real-world experience while working as a sys/network admin. PLI is a must, what would you carry out on a penetration test for small businesses? Running an OpenVAS scan and handing it to them would be nice but at the same time it would seem excessive to spend two weeks doing recon to try and determine their security status.
Ant tips or pathway ideas would be much appreciated!
