Wildcard SSL Certificates and proper installation for domain and subdomains

Delving into an area I have little or no experience.  We purchased a wildcard SSL certificate for our main website.  After a conversation with our DNS provider it's been brought to my attention that the 'proper' way to install SSL certificates is for one, the first certificate downloaded from the provider should be installed on the server hosting the primary domain.  i.e. www.MyDomain.com.   Then because it's a wildcard, the certificate would need to be exported from that site to be used with any other sites, i.e. subdomains, something about not breaking the chain of authority?  So, I've gotten the primary certificate exported but, not really understanding anything about what I'm doing, I'm being told by our hosting provider for our main site that it doesn't matter, and he sent me a pfx file.  But he didn't send me the password, so now I'm struggling with importing the certificate into another server for a subdomain where we want to run some other services.  They exported from an IIs6 server, this new server is running iis 8, I can get the cert imported and then it disappears from the IIS certificates form. So it's a kunundrum really.

Is there a good book, document, dissertation, ANYTHING out there that I might be able to get my hands on to learn more about SSL certificates so I can understand what it is I'm trying to accomplish?  Right now everyone is finger pointing and I'm sick of not knowing where the real issue lies :)

Thanks in advance!

Chris
