XP end of life software?

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone in here is going to preserve their XP machines. Sorry if this is a repost or in the wrong category... Please move it wherever. 

I'm curious what the best software to keep Windows XP going...

I've heard about that registry hack for allowing updates, but I'm wondering if there's anything else I can do, and if you guys know of any software that will still help the XP-using world (Such as it is...)

EDIT: Thank you all so much for the help! This community is absolutely amazing. Main focus is going to be upgrading but I will also be seeing what I can do to strengthen protection in the interim.
