So I received a call the other day from a customer. She told me that she had a phone call from the "Windows Help Desk" and that "there have been 3000 hacks to her system."
The "Help Desk Tech" instructed her to go to TeamViewer.com and install Team Viewer. Now he had access to her PC. He installed a Rogue AV and showed her all of the Trojans and fake alerts and then brought her to a website where she could choose to purchase one of 3 protection plans: $299, $399, or $499. "This will ensure that this will never happen again," he said.
She got the guy's phone number, a 347 number out of New York, hung up and called me. He called back every 15 mins thereafter and answered the phone when she called him back.
Not wanting to risk anything I searched for rootkits, and wiped the PC. By the time I left she had called and reported him to the local FBI office.
It takes guts to do something like this. The right target will fall for it. Just thought I'd share that with everyone. Tell your mothers and great aunts! Don't let them fall victim to this heinous act of fraud!
